The Personal Side:
John grew up alternating his time between a cattle ranch that belonged to his grandparents in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and a preparatory school in Ojai, California where his parents taught high school. After long periods of time in New Jersey, Florida, Texas, California, Switzerland, Kenya and Massachusetts, he moved to Colorado in 1978.
John met his wife, DeAnne Butterfield, when they were both in the same class at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Since they both love the West (DeAnne is a fourth generation Oregonian) they moved to Colorado to put down roots together.
In their spare time, John and DeAnne love kayaking, snowboarding and hanging with their daughter, Jesse, a teenager, who attends public school in Boulder where she has pursued a bilingual program (Spanish and English) that began in kindergarten.
The whole family is also engaged with two close friends in building a log cabin, using post and beam construction, at 8900 feet near Rollinsville, Colorado. It is an intensive and delightful six-year production!
John has visited 45 countries and all continents, including Antarctica, and speaks French, Spanish and Swahili. His favorite trip? In 1983, he and DeAnne took the train from Beijing, China, to Barcelona, Spain.
